Is My Child Ready For This Activity?
Your child is ready when they can recognise letters and type or tap individual keys. This builds naturally on Read Words — if they can read a word, they're ready to try spelling it.
Levels & Progress
This activity has 5 levels with increasing word length:
| Level | Word Length | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 letters | at, go, up, on |
| 2 | 3 letters | cat, dog, sun, hat |
| 3 | 4 letters | fish, book, frog |
| 4 | 5 letters | apple, happy, water |
| 5 | 6 letters | rabbit, orange |
As your child advances they'll work with longer words, building both spelling accuracy and keyboard confidence.
Gameplay Experience
- See the Word: The target word is shown at the top as a row of letter tiles — tap it to hear it read aloud
- Type Each Letter: Press the matching key on the on-screen keyboard (or a physical keyboard)
- Hear the Letter Name: Each correct keypress plays the letter's name out loud
- Watch the Word Fill In: Correctly typed letters appear in the boxes below, turning green one by one
- Wrong Key?: The box shakes gently and a soft sound plays — just try again, no penalty!
-
Word Complete: After the last letter:
- 🎉 Confetti celebration
- The correct sound plays
- The full word is spoken aloud
Visual Feedback:
- 🟩 Green box: letter typed correctly
- ⬜ Dashed border: the letter your child needs to type next
- ⬜ Faint border: letters still to come
- 🟥 Red shake: incorrect keypress — try again
Learning Objectives
- Spelling: Reinforcing the letter order of common words
- Letter names: Hearing each letter's name as it's typed strengthens the alphabet connection
- Keyboard familiarity: Building comfort with both on-screen and physical keyboards
- Left-to-right sequencing: Typing words in order supports reading direction
- Confidence: Immediate positive feedback for every correct step keeps children motivated
Progress Tracking
Each round tracks:
- The target word
- Whether the word was completed
- Accuracy across all keypresses (correct vs. total attempts)
Sound On?
Highly recommended! Sound is central to how this activity teaches:
- Letter names play on every correct keypress — your child hears "bee" when they type B
- A chime plays when the last letter is typed
- The full word is spoken after completion
The audio reinforces the spelling letter-by-letter, making it much more effective than typing in silence.
