Word Patterns

A phonics activity where children identify words that share the same pattern such as ending with the same sound or starting with the same letter.

Is My Child Ready For This Activity?

Word Patterns builds on basic reading skills. It is suitable for children who can read simple 3-letter words and are beginning to notice patterns in words.

Levels & Progress

This activity cycles through 10 rhyme families:

Family Example Words
-at cat, bat, hat, mat
-in bin, fin, pin, win
-an ban, can, fan, man
-ot dot, got, hot, pot
-ig big, dig, pig, wig
-ap cap, gap, lap, map
-et bet, get, jet, pet
-un bun, fun, run, sun
-op hop, mop, pop, top
-it bit, fit, hit, sit

Gameplay Experience

  1. See the Cards: Six word cards appear on screen
  2. Hear the Instruction: "Tap words ending with 'at'"
  3. Find and Tap: Tap all words that match the ending sound
  4. Feedback:
    • Correct match: Card turns green — keep going!
    • Wrong card: Gentle buzz and the card turns orange — try another!
  5. Complete: When all matching words are tapped, confetti celebrates and the next pattern begins

Tip: Tap the header to hear the instruction again.
